A particularly intriguing expression from the New Zealand distillery, the Scapegrace Black is the world’s first naturally black gin and represents the brand’s most experimental and contemporary interpretation.
Built on a London Dry–style gin base, it is enhanced with a carefully selected range of natural botanicals that define an unprecedented sensory profile and its distinctive deep black colour. The recipe uses organic and meticulously selected ingredients. Alongside juniper, pH-sensitive botanicals are employed, whose chromatic and aromatic expression is determined by distillation temperature and the order in which they are introduced during production. These include aronia berries, pineapple, butterfly pea (Clitoria ternatea), sweet potato and saffron. In keeping with the entire Scapegrace range, Black is also produced in small batches using discontinuous distillation in 19th-century copper pot stills.
The alcohol base is derived from pure grain, while the water comes from rainfall retained for approximately eighty years in the mountains of the west coast of the South Island and naturally filtered through underground rock layers. The result is a full-bodied spirit that keeps juniper as its structural backbone while expanding the aromatic spectrum towards tropical fruit notes and earthy nuances. When mixed with tonic water, the colour evolves from deep black to a vivid violet-pink hue, offering a striking and distinctive visual experience.

Color: Black with green highlights.
Nose: It opens in a surprisingly fruity way, with immediate notes of pineapple and lemon. Resinous juniper follows, along with dry earthy nuances and a gradual spicy development. Subtle herbal and floral accents emerge in the background, adding depth to the aromatic profile.
Palate: The entry is oily. Juniper asserts itself with spicy, peppery notes, balanced by a floral component and a mentholated note that brings freshness. The citrus element remains well balanced and integrated, while beneath the herbal profile delicate tropical fruit notes reappear, particularly pineapple.
Finish: Enveloping, with echoes of sweet potato and pineapple and a velvety mouthfeel supported by citrus oils. Juniper and freshly cut grass persist, with a dry, elegant close that maintains balance between sweet, spicy and earthy
