The Sakurao Gin Original is the result of the craftsmanship of the Sakurao Distillery, founded in 1918 in the coastal town of Sakurao in Hatsukaichi, Hiroshima Prefecture, southern Japan. Inspired by the traditional English methods of London Dry Gin, this spirit combines classic European elegance with a deep connection to Japanese terroir. The recipe uses 14 botanicals: five classics such as juniper berries and coriander seeds, and nine local ingredients sourced from the Hiroshima region, including lemon, yuzu, Navel orange, summer sweet orange, Dai Dai (Japanese bitter orange), Hinoki bark (Japanese cypress), green tea, Aka Shiso (red perilla), and ginger.
Each botanical is carefully selected and processed to preserve its freshest and most authentic characteristics. The gin is distilled in small batches using an Arnold Holstein copper still from Germany. The production process employs a hybrid method that combines direct maceration of botanicals in neutral sugarcane spirit with vapor distillation, where botanicals are placed in a basket through which the alcohol vapors pass, extracting the most delicate and volatile aromas.
The result is a refined, aromatic, and complex gin, where citrus, floral, balsamic, and spicy notes coexist in harmony. Every sip tells the natural essence of Hiroshima, celebrating the perfect meeting of tradition, innovation, and Japanese craftsmanship.
