The Portobello Road Celebrated Butter Gin is a refined reinterpretation of the classic London Dry, inspired by a curious 19th-century expression. The name comes from a reference found in the writings of Charles Dickens, in which he mentioned a particularly fine gin nicknamed “Celebrated Butter Gin.”
In Sketches by Boz, Dickens describes the lively atmosphere of a Gin Palace, citing the colourful names given to gins of the era, including “The real knock me down,” “The strip me naked,” “Cream of the Valley” and, indeed, “Celebrated Butter Gin.” Despite the name, it’s unlikely that these gins actually contained butter: they were more likely early marketing ploys designed to evoke luxury and quality at a time when sugar and fats were prestigious commodities, accessible only to the wealthiest classes.
Today, the Portobello Road Distillery has chosen to interpret that historic definition quite literally, transforming it into a contemporary gin that is distinctive and surprising. The spirit is made from the classic base of Portobello Road No. 171, then redistilled in small 30-litre batches with the addition of unsalted English butter. The result is a gin with a velvety texture and delicate sweet-savory nuances, while still retaining the dry, aromatic character typical of a London Dry.

Colour: Clear, crystalline.
Nose: On the nose, it presents the same elements as the classic Portobello Road, with intense aromas of spicy white pepper and rich berries, along with a pronounced and immediate presence of fresh juniper. A complex yet well-defined fragrance, combining spicy notes with balsamic and herbal undertones.
Palate: The gin reveals itself as smooth and velvety. Juniper and coriander dominate, accompanied by hints of lemongrass, white pepper, and dried flowers. The buttery note, subtle yet enveloping, lends a silky, almost pâtisserie-like sensation that perfectly balances the dry profile typical of a London Dry.
Finish: Long and persistent, with a return of buttery croissant, light spices, and pine resin. It closes with a clean, dry citrus note, characteristic of the Portobello Road style.
