The Masahiro Okinawa Recipe 02 is the second “recipe” from the historic Masahiro Shuzo distillery, founded in 1883 on the island of Okinawa, in southern Japan. This subtropical island, stretching towards Thailand, is renowned for its warm climate and rich biodiversity, full of exotic plants and intense fragrances.
The Recipe 02 was developed to capture this tropical essence, presenting a new botanical composition while retaining the distinctive Awamori alcohol base – the traditional rice distillate of Okinawa, considered the oldest alcoholic beverage in Japan. Unlike sake, which is fermented, Awamori is distilled, making it more similar to shōchū but with unique characteristics tied to its ingredients, fermentation, and production method.
In Recipe 02, juniper berries are combined with six fresh and aromatic botanicals:
• Citrus Tankan – a citrus fruit native to Okinawa, providing a refreshing, sweet, and zesty note
• Southern mint – for a balsamic freshness
• Aromaticus – an aromatic plant with a clove-like fragrance
• Alpinia zerumbet – also known as “moon peach” or shell ginger, with floral and spicy nuances
• Ginger – for a warm, slightly spicy touch
• Lemongrass – adding green and citrusy notes
The Recipe 02 stands out for its more herbaceous aromatic profile, clearly distinguishing it from Recipe 01. It is characterised by a pleasant, refreshing citrus note, giving the gin a unique personality and a fresh twist compared to the previous version.
