The Downpour Scottish Dry Gin is the flagship expression of the North Uist Distillery Co., a family-run distillery located in the remote Outer Hebrides, on the island of North Uist.
Internationally acclaimed, this gin was crafted to highlight its striking natural opalescence: a “downpour” of essential oils that bloom when mixed with tonic and ice, caused by the drop in temperature and shift in alcohol concentration. Crystal-clear in the bottle, it transforms into a cloudy liquid in the glass — a phenomenon known in the industry as “louching,” considered a sign of intensity and aromatic richness.
The recipe blends classic juniper with a mix of citrus fruits (lemon, orange, grapefruit), warm spices (cloves, cassia), and a peppery kick from cubeb berries. Completing the profile are locally foraged wild heather flowers, adding a delicately sweet floral note and a deep connection to the island’s rugged landscape.

Palate: Dry and bold, with a strong opening of juniper and pine, giving way to herbal and citrus notes. At the heart of the sip lies an elegant blend of floral spices and the unmistakable Scottish heather, adding roundness and aromatic depth.
Finish: Long, dry, and full-bodied, with a complex aromatic return that balances citrus zest, gentle spice, and a subtle floral-balsamic nuance.
